Last night I got to enjoy the experience of logging four hours in the CS:GO Beta. Upon receiving my Beta key I called my boss to tell him I quit, broke up with my girlfriend, and paid off my doctor to forge a medical slip declaring I had AIDS and could no longer attend my university classes. Needless to say I plan on spending the next few weeks eating protein shakes and staying hydrated through a steady drip of intravenous fluids. Today I'm going to write about the game mode that I played the most in first ten hours of game time: Arsenal.

Two rough losses to start the season

In our latest foray into emerging competitive fields, DTF entered the 5 v 5 Infantry Only Team War Fare League. It's been a rough two weeks, with a constantly shifting starting line up, and being new to the competitive play style, we lost both matches by a large margin. With the acquiescence of a scrim server, and the help of committed members as the season progresses we hope to perform to our own standards by placing in at least the top half of the league.

Brophy talks with Wilkin on DTF in TCN Season 3

In January, 2012, Down To Frag put a team in the latest season of The Competitive Network's Day of Defeat:Source league. DTF started off with two preseason wins, but struggled after that to keep a consistent roster and build their teamwork into a winning force. DTF finished the regular season qualifying for playoffs with a record of two wins, one tie, and one forfeit win seeding them in 8th place, the lowest seed of the tournament. I got a chance to interview Wilkin the team leader before their playoff match against the number one seeded Chicago Bulls.

Breakdown: Wargame: European Escalation is a tactical RTS produced by one of my favorite video game companies Eugen. W:EE pits the two factions of the Warsaw Pact and NATO against one another in hypothetical battle across eastern european landscapes. Players have the option of playing 1v1, 2v2, 3v3 or 4v4 in online multiplayer (all of these available in ranked matchmaking) as well as playing through single player operations.

DTF Invitational Rules

DTF: Invitational Tournament Rules:

DTF:I is a Day of Defeat Source realism tournament.

Matches will be played once a week.

Every unit will play each other unit once or twice depending on season length.

There will be two pre-season matches.

During the regular season, each unit will play every other unit once.

The Standings at the end of the regular season will determine seeding for a playoff bracket.

Every unit will play in the playoffs, there is no standing cut off.

All units will be seeded into playoffs with the team with the highest standing getting a bye, in case of an uneven amount of units in participation.

All matches are played in standard realism settings with attack vs. attack in the result of a 2:2 tie in round score.

Scheduling

Every match has a default playing time of 6:30 PM Eastern Standard Time on Sunday.

For any given match, units are allowed to schedule and play their match before the default match time.

Units are encouraged to communicate with one another to set a match time that is good for both units.

If units do schedule to play their match for the week at a time other than the default match time, it must be reported and confirmed by both units in the match communications area and on the server reservation form.

If a unit fails to play both preseason matches they are automatically removed from the regular season scheduling; any unit disqualified for failing to show for pre-season matches must notify a DTF admin that they wish to continue to play in the tournament should they have the desire to do so.

Points

Points for each team are allotted based upon the overall outcome of a match.

Two points are awarded for a won match.

Zero points are awarded for a lost match.

One point is awarded for a team that is stood up for a match(that is that the opposing team was a no show).

Both teams must report the match results in the match communications area post match.

If there is a dispute between the teams the official record by the in-game admins will be reviewed and used to score the match (in-game admins take status screen shots at the beginning and end of every match, and screen shots of the score board after every round).

Pre-Match

Units are only allowed to play with members on their roster for that match.

Each unit may roster as many players as they would like for the over all tournament.

It is recommended units only roster active members who will participate in tournament matches (20-25 members per unit is considered reasonable).

For each match, units must declare before the match the players that will be in attendance; units are allowed to declare three back up-players.

There is no penalty for playing a back up player, over someone designated as a starter.

Should a player participate in a match that is not on the roster for that week that player receives a one week suspension and the outcome of the match may be over turned at the match admins discretion.

Rosters lock after regular season week four; this prevents teams from adding any more players to their roster. The reason this is done is to prevent ringer situations in the latter half of the season heading into the championship bracket.

Match Rules

Weapons

The weapon allotment for each match is as follows: 1 automatic weapon (this can be either support weapons, light weapons, or a mix of the two), 1 rocket, 1 Machine-gun OR 1 Sniper.

All weapons can be picked up by any player from either team (all pickups).

Third Party Voice Servers

Units are welcome to use their third party voice servers, so long as a DTF:I admin is given access to the channel the unit is communicating in for the duration of the match.

The DTF Ventrilo is an option for units who request it in the match communications area; a private channel will be created for units who request them and a DTF admin will be in the channel for the duration of the match.

In-game Communication

No in game commands are allowed to be used (players are allowed to use the in-game push to talk system).

If a player uses a derogatory in-game command (such as !negative) that player is given a 1 match suspension.

If a player receives three suspensions in one season they are suspended for the entire season.

In game trash talking will also result in a 1 game suspension, with the season suspension an option if there is a persistent problem.

There is no over sight to what units say in third party voice servers, this communication will not result in disciplinary action for any player with the exception of ghosting.

Ghosting will result in a round disqualification.

In-game Anti-Cheat

All players are required to record demos for the duration of the DTF:I match.

If a unit needs instructions on how to do so, they need only ask the DTF:I admins present for each match.

Should a player’s performance be contested (reported for suspicious behavior in game) then that players demos will be requested by the DTF Anti-Cheat staff. This demo is required to be submitted by the player within 48 hours of being notified by a DTF:AC staff.

DTF admins will be present in game for each match. One admin will be placed on each team, and the mini-map will be turned off for players who are dead and in spectate.

Team black out will be applied, so players may view their own teammates, but not the opposing teams positions upon death.

Home/Away Team Assignment

For each match there will be a home and an away team. The home team must defend for the first round (meaning they will start the match on the axis side) and the away team must attack.

Home/Away team assignment will alternate every week, so no team will start a match as the same side twice in a row.

Match Reporting

The leaders for each team are BOTH required to report the match results after the match.

This is done as a means for units to honorably report the match scores.

Reporting Cheating/Cheating Violations

Teams who suspect foul play by a player can report them anonymously by using the report player form on the DTF forums.

Upon being reported, the suspected players demos will be reviewed in full by the DTF:AC Staff and then independently confirmed with respected personalities on the Competitive DOD:S AC Staff.

After the reviews are complete and a consensus is reached, the decision of the AC staff will be reported to the individuals Commanding Officer.

If a player is banned for cheating in a match, that player is NEVER allowed to participate in a DTF:I tournament in the future.

Status screen shots are taken by each admin at the beginning and end of matches to confirm that no known cheaters are on either team.

If a player is convicted of cheating, all of the matches they played in will be overturned.

Map Reports

A map report will be released for each map before the season begins, that detail allowed things on each map (such as prop boosted/barricading); these reports will also designate possible off-limit areas.

Championship Information

All championship information will be posted after the roster lock during the fourth week of the regular season. This will include an explanation of how playoff seeding works and the maps to be played.
